Chris Milk - The treachery of sanctuary

When i first saw this video i knew i wanted to create something just like it.
At the moment i haven't quite go the means to do it but i do have the imagination. For my final project of the term i have decided to come up with a fantasy idea where i will take the inspiration of moving image and people controlling the images to create what it would be like inside a bee hive.

Visual Treatment

Organic kingdom  The Hive

The Hive – A honeybee related project. Over the summer I was sad to see a lot of bees had been killed or were dying so in relation to organic kingdom I came up with this treatment. I wanted to spread awareness of the diminishing numbers of the honeybee population.

The idea behind my work is to create a motion image that capture the viewer lets them make up their own thoughts and feelings about my project.
What I would intend to produce is a visual that the person could step inside. Whether it is a gallery space or a room. Some where away from outside noise. Using a mandala I would create different patterns across a plain back drop. Moving the image in a phycadelic way. To increase the interest of the viewer.

This is the sort of effect I want to create. A peace yet mind boggling atmosphere I want the participant of my piece to make his or her own conclusions to my work and not be told how to feel.

(Alice falling down the rabbit hole)

The rabbit hole effect would be a great aspect for my work, to make people forget about real life and just be entranced by my work for a short while. Even though it isn’t real.

This is the video that inspired me to make an interactive, motion graphics.  The concept behind the piece is genius.

Within the motion graphic I hope to involve my own artwork, I have done different designs of both full-bodied bees. I am also interested in looking at different patterns and shapes to make up the bee formation or be a representation of what is possible.

If I didn’t do this I will be drawing bees that have a tribal feel to them. I got the inspiration for this from a friend’s work she has recently been posting on her blog.
I think the pattern will make a more interesting effect. If I went down this route, I will probably create visualizations from the bees, relating back to the video, which I captured at the Tate gallery in 2013 but I do not know which artist produced the piece.

To create an alternate universe for my viewers I would also incorporate the hum the bees make whilst they are buzzing around the hive.  I did think about putting a sound track to the motion but people would only have to experience this for a short while if the natural noises were used.

This video is perfect to reflect one of the moods I would like to portray through my work. With the clever use of light and relating back to the organic kingdom within the video. Also the song isn’t only vocal, there are some hidden sounds within.

For my idea I would make the screen look like there is a swarm of bees around a hive that will disperse when the audience enter the room and the room will be filled with colourful visualisations  As the audience moves so will the visualisations  This is will be done in the same way Chris Milk created ‘The treachery of sanctuary’. Through kinetic controllers and infrared lights. These will pick up the motions of the audience and change the visualizations on the screens in front of them.

For the test of my visualisation I have created a short video which shows a small draft of what I would like to produce. On a blank backdrop of white so that the image is clear even when it fades in and out of focus. I have made it so the patterns overlap which to me looks busy - 'Like a bee'.
I want my piece to be enchanting for the viewer. Fun to watch and spur on creativeness.
If i had to produce this on a larger scale this would only be part of my project. Possibly at the start of the movement to build up intensity and interest in the viewer. Expanding and distorting its self in to different views, to create an effect which could resemble being in a hive, in a creative way. I think the pattern of the mandala reflects the tribal patterns i wanted to incorporate on to the bees bodies.
I have also used a different sound track, It is still along the lines of what I would like to have a in my motion image. The music is sweet and peaceful. It would be captivating for the viewer.

Point to pixel final pictures

Point to pixel has been my favourite project of the three, this may be because i've had a chance to explore different fonts, shapes and colours and do a wide range of research out in the environment looking at signage rather than online or in books.

I have tried to place my signs in area you are most likely fine them. Also i have tried to photograph them in a scenic location, so when i put my book together it looks interesting and will make people want to look through to the next page. I have chosen more urban decaying areas which already have existing signs and notices. These pictures will appeal to a more alternative audience.

I am undecided whether to put text in the publication or let it be self explanatory with a brief description of what the book entails. This would be to let the viewer com up with their own ideas about the work .

Passing time final pieces

These are the final prints of my Passing time project. I have printed them to A3 format and taken photographs of them together. I think it changes the narrative of the picture when they are placed with others that don't quite correspond.

Here I have put two contradicting photographs together. They are contradicting because the one on the left is a group picture, which looks to be indoors and everyone is quite formal. Whereas the right hand photograph has been taken in an outdoor environment and the figure looks like they are posing but is far more natural than the other picture.

I chose mainly portraits because i think they show more of the time change, because of  fashion and style of the people involved in them. Within this it links to the project of passing time.

Sainsburys art centre

Yesterday at the spare of the moment we decided to take a short trip to the UEA, to check out the arts centre. It was an intriguing collection of sculptures, installations and paintings, because the collection was taken from Mr & Mrs Sainsbury's personal collections it included many old artefacts.

Every thing was very varied around the exhibit. Some of the pieces were tools and fighting weapons
people have used, or have been crafted. From very simplistic arrow head to extravagant staffs with semi precious stones placed in to the wood.

With a mix of historical artefacts and fine art pieces, i found the arts centre to be inspiring to look at the past for influence on my work. For the use of animals and shapes within the pieces that were created at these points in time.

Craig Oldham

Designers are wankers

Today we had a lecture with Craig Oldham which was very insightful. Unlike other lecturers he didn't show us example of his work. Instead he showed us what our work could be like. By using experimentation and making mistakes.
Examples of work included what his parents had produced unknowing of their design genius.
They had created their own representation of vinyl covers, using found materials from around their house. This showed us as a view, even the simplest of ideas will be appreciated.

Textbook Studio

Recently we had a visit with 2 of the 3 people who work at Textbook studios. They are a northern based company that rely doing there work within a classic studio. Using forgotten practices and teaching them selves new techniques to create their pieces of design.

Well known for their imaginative designs and use of Risograph printing the small but successful business is consumed with publications. Their work is based around the environment and get a lot of their clientele because of this.

The workshop they set us was called 'Schaden - Freurde' - Taking pleasure in the misfortune of others. Our task was to take one of the sentences and within a group create a publication that explains it perfectly. Using print, found image/ type, drawing and what other type of materials we could find or have. The publication had to be entirely made out of paper and the we had to think of our method of binding the pages or keeping them together in some format.

I did gain experience out of this workshop. It helped me to broaden my horizons. I didn't quite finish my personal publication but the Textbook studio artists had brought some fantastic pieces for inspiration. The use of different colours and printing techniques was amazing.

Tracey Emin

The use of text and object

Tracey Emin is world renowned  for her conceptual art pieces. Using every day objects and life lessons to create her pieces. In the form of installations pieces her work has a very feminist back story.

I have chosen this piece because of the use of type and the way Emin has made the letter luminous to reflect the tone of the message she is trying to portray. Mixing humour and crudeness.
The linguistic for of the sentence makes the phrase feel broken. Like it has a sarcastic tone and almost bitterness behind it. Very much how an angry woman would sound.

The just of fluorescent lighting introduces another element to the work. Almost like old diner style signage or even a tacky display at a fairground. It provokes the idea of sex with the use of pink before the word 'cunt' is even unraveled.

Point to Pixel

My work so far

It is coming close to the end of term and i feel like i have done nothing. So the other day i had some serious studio time and got down to business.

With Point to Pixel from my understanding of the project is that we had to take text and typography out of its context and its usual environment, and place it some where else. Using any medium or means. So for my work I used informational signs and re-worked them in to life observations or witty comments.
I have produced my own stickers to stick around the city and on trains. I am doing this because these are the two areas i collected my images from.

For the train stickers i researched in to the 30 most irritating this people could do on a train. Then from this i made 12 stickers  with those phrases on.

With the images i collect from my stickers i am going to create a mini journal of the journey i have taken to create these. From the original images i create the pieces from to the final out comes and then the images of them in the real world.

Jake and Dinos Chapman

Recreation of Goya's - Disasters of war

Jake and Dinos Chapman brought out a series of 'rectified' etchings done by a printer/ painter Goya. Some people believe they have vandalise the originals.

Disasters of war - Insult to injury

They have changed all the visible victims faces to either clowns or puppies head.  This new work is called 'Insult to injury'.

In my opinion the work has been rejuvenated to appeal to a broader audience. Unlike when Goya first produced these etchings, because they were seen as unpatriotic. The etchings weren't released until three and a half decades after his death. This work will appeal to a a broader audience because of the street art element to the characters that are now the faces of the bodies.

By the Chapman taking these etchings and reworking in to them it has changed the idea of the physical is often more important than the digital and with them using 80 of the originals these can never go back.

The history of posters

The poster was first established around the 15th Century. These posters were very informative being more type than image. The viewer would have to be very close to read the text.

This poster is depicting a deceitful German Jewish man.

After this in the 19th century the poster was re-invented to use more coloured inks, larger paper. This helped the poster evolve in to something more eye catching for the viewer.

Posters started to take a turn and as well as being informative they were eye catching to the viewer. A style in Paris had hit and it was called La Belle Epoque. An artist called Jules Chéret became a master of this style of work using lithograph and painting to make the posters.

Lucian Bernhard was the next great creator of the poster. Simplifying them by just the use of simple image and text. Unlike the flamboyant use of colour and text Chéret used in his work. Bernhard was also a type designer, producing the font in the above image.
From this sort of work other designers have taken influence and create similar work. Using the simplistic colours, shape and text.
